Frequently
Asked Question

Frequently
Asked Question
01/
What is a Pupil Barrister?
A pupil barrister is a barrister completing the last stages of training, which is usually called a pupillage.
A pupillage is the third and final stage to becoming a practising barrister. It is the work-based component of the training process. This is divided into your first six (non-practising) and your second six (practising). However, my pupillage will last for 18 months. Therefore, I will have a first 9 and second 9.

02/
What does the pupillage involve?
Each pupil will sit with four successive pupillage supervisors. In the first nine, you will be assisting me shadow my supervisors in Court, conferences and Chambers, prepare written submissions, pleadings, advices and other paperwork in the cases in which my supervisors are involved. In the second nine, you will help me with going to court for small claims cases or interim applications, and drafting pleadings or advices.

03/
Is the start date flexible?
No. I need to cover my Assistant's leave.

04/
I have never done legal research before. Does that matter?
Legal research is fundamental to the role. You will be able to learn how to use legal libraries, such as Westlaw and LexisNexis, but you will need to demonstrate that you can conduct professional and academic research

05/
English is not my first language. Does that matter?
I have employed lots of people who have English as a second language, but you will need to understand my instructions and write fluently.

06/
There are some things in the job description I have not done before. Does that matter?
Not necessarily, as long as you can demonstrate the required skills. A willingness to try and to learn is most important.
You will be supported with learning everything you need to know.

07/
Is this a full-time or part time job?
This is a cover role from 8th - 17th February 2023.

08/
Do I need to do anything "medical"?
No. Everything you do for me is just doing physical things that I can't do for myself.

9/
Is there an induction period?
Yes, the 8th and 9th February 2023.

10/
I've never done "personal" things for someone else before. Isn't that a bit weird?
I have gotten used to it, and you will too.

11/
Can I request access/
reasonable adjustments?
Yes. Please contact me and we can discuss changes to the process that will enable you to show your potential.

12/
Who is the employer?
Me.
